What are Associate And Affiliate Programs? > View our Search Partners in " Nasdaq Quote "
Assocaite and affiliate marketing programs allow a merchant web site to compensate an affiliated Web site for sending traffic.
While the dynamics of the web allow any sites to link to any other site without compensation, associate and affliate programs provide a means for the referring site to profit from referrals that results in a product sale or lead generation.
These affiliate commissions can be thought of as finder's fees.
Merchants typically pay a percentage of the sale - ranging from 5 to 15 percent, sometimes higher. Accumulated fees are paid to the affiliate site on a monthly, quarterly, or semiannual basis, depending on the program.
Amazon.com is widely accepted as a vanguard of associate marketing.
It was one of the first sites to launch an associate program in 1996, and today it boasts over hundreds of thousands of associates.
The terms - Associate and Affiliate - are generally interchangeable.
While Amazon.com popularized the associate term, the majority of merchants refer to their affinity marketing efforts as affiliate programs.

It's important to differentiate true affiliate marketing programs, which pay a bounty per sale or lead, from similar forms of Internet Marketing, which pay for the display of banner advertisments or per click-buck.
The merchant pays only when an item is sold or when a valid lead is received.
This allows the merchant to create brand awareness through banner advertising without spending a fortune on a conventional advertising campaign.
To paraphrase the Dire Straits Song, merchants only pay " money for something and get their click-throughs for free "
Affiliate web sites do not have to pay to join these great programs.
Generally, there's no fee; all the checks flow from the merchants to the affilaite.
If a program does have a sign-up fee, be wary.
Why you need this page:
Is it time for your web site to earn its keep?
Are you interested in affiliate marketing as a way to raise money for a nonprofit organization?
Do you need to make the most of your present affiliate efforts?
This page cuts through the hype to help you understand how affilaite programs work and how they can best work for you.
Despite the claims of certain parties, there are precious few who have become filthy rich from their affiliate web site.
On the other hand, certain sites have made a tidy sum.
A quick scan of the highest monthly program payouts proves to be enlightening.
In some ways, affiliate marketing hearkens back to the carnival barker.
This page serves as your filter, to " optimize your signal-to-noise ratio ". There are upwards of a thousand associate and affiliate programs these days, many making claims that would be impossible to achieve, if not incredibly difficult. If you were to believe some of these claims, you'd retire to your own island in the South Pacific in a matter of months.
Our Goal is to help you think about your web site in a slightly different light. We want you to consider the site content and audience, along with your immediate and long-term goals. You can get where you want to go.
You just have to chart your course. If you're to succeed as an affiliate, you must set your expectations reasonably and, most importantly, think strategically about which programs are right for your web site.

Types of Programs:
There are a number of different types of affiliate marketing programs.
Sales Commission:
The affiliate site is paid a percentage of each sale. The percentage varies, depending on the merchant's program, type of goods, and any special incentives in force at the item of sale.
Customer Acquisition:
The affiliate site is paid a fee for each new customer referred to the merchant. The customer acquisition fee may be paid in addition to (or in lieu of) a sales commission.
Lead Generation:
The affiliate site is paid a fee for each valid lead. These fees vary widely. A request to be added to a mailing list might net the affiliate site a dollar, while a successful credit card application can pull in twenty bucks.
Click-through:
The affiliate site is paid for each click-through to the merchant's web site. Because click-through fees often net only pennies a pop, it takes a significant volume of traffic to make these programs worthwhile for the affiliate site.
Impression:
The affiliate is paid a flat fee based on every thousand impressions. Due to the numbers involved, low traffic sites are usually cut out of this more conventional form of web advertising.
